eClinicalWorks Patient Texting

Patients text the number they already call, and every reply lands in one shared inbox. Contacts are built from your eClinicalWorks charts, so your contact list is your patient list. There is nothing to import and nothing to keep in sync.

Powering eClinicalWorks practices of all sizes

Getting texting running

The setup question that actually matters is whether patients will recognize the number you text from.

1

Use the number patients know

Texting can be enabled on your existing office line without interrupting voice calls. You can also take a new number to keep the channels separate.

2

Contacts come from the chart

Patient contacts are created from eClinicalWorks charts rather than imported from a spreadsheet, so there is no stale second list.

3

Reply from the shared inbox

All conversations sit in one practice inbox, and threads can be assigned when a particular person needs to handle something.

What practices say

No second patient list to maintain

Every messaging tool that keeps its own contact database drifts out of date within a quarter. Building contacts from eClinicalWorks charts means the number you text is the number in the record.

  • Contacts auto-created from eClinicalWorks patient charts
  • Message a patient directly from their chart
  • No CSV import and no separate address book
  • Staff never use personal phones to reach patients
No second patient list to maintain

What patients send you can go into the record

Patients send photographs: a rash, a wound, a bottle of medication. Those belong on the chart, not in a thread on a workstation. Importing them is a deliberate action, not an automatic dump.

  • Import files and photos from a conversation into the eClinicalWorks chart
  • Export a whole conversation and attach it as a document
  • Images stay off staff devices
  • Scheduling chatter can be left out of the record entirely

Questions we get asked first

The things eClinicalWorks practices want settled before a demo.

Where do the contacts come from?

From eClinicalWorks patient charts. There is no spreadsheet import and no separate address book, so the messaging list never drifts away from the record.

Can we text from our main office number?

Usually, yes, and it is worth doing because patients ignore numbers they do not recognize. Enabling texting on an existing line leaves voice service working. A separate number is available if you prefer.

Do patients need to log in anywhere?

No. Messages arrive as ordinary texts. For clinical content they tap a secure link that verifies their identity, which still does not require an account or a password.

Can a patient send us a photo?

Yes, and you can import it into the eClinicalWorks chart from the conversation. That keeps clinical images out of staff phones and camera rolls.

Is patient texting HIPAA compliant?

Standard SMS is not a protected channel, so anything clinical goes through the identity-verified secure message. We sign a Business Associate Agreement; the HIPAA compliance page covers the rest.
