Questions we get asked first
The things AthenaHealth practices want settled before a demo.
Can we keep our current fax number?
Yes. Numbers can be ported, so nobody who sends you referrals needs to update anything. Running a new number in parallel during the switch is also possible.
Are inbound faxes matched to AthenaHealth patients automatically?
Automatic patient matching is a Practice Fusion capability today. On AthenaHealth, a staff member selects the patient and imports the document. The AI still reads and summarizes each fax, so you are not opening every page to work out what it is.
Can we fax a whole chart out?
Not yet on AthenaHealth. Individual documents can be faxed, and referrals can be created from the chart. Sending the full chart in one action is still in development.
Do we need a fax line or a machine?
No. It is entirely cloud-based, with no analog line, no hardware, and no toner. Staff work from the browser, which is what lets documents move into the chart directly.
What does the AI actually do to an incoming fax?
It reads the document, produces a short summary, tags what type of document it is, and routes it to the right inbox. A person still decides where it is filed.
Is it HIPAA compliant?
Yes. Documents are encrypted in transit and at rest, access is logged, and we sign a Business Associate Agreement during onboarding. Details are on our HIPAA compliance page.
